Litigation and resolving disputes – VAT tribunals

Unfortunately, disputes with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) do arise and appear to be increasing at an alarming rate.

Often, the matter can be resolved relatively quickly. Where it can’t, we can advise you on the alternatives open to you and the merits and chances of success with each.

We will not ‘hype-up’ your chances simply to generate work, but will advise you, warts-and-all, bearing in mind that cost is an important factor for you.

Should you need advice in deciding whether to seek a local reconsideration of HMRC’s decision or to lodge an appeal direct to the VAT & Duties Tribunal, we will be there to guide you and assist where needed.

It used to be the case that appearing before the VAT & Duties Tribunal was a relatively informal affair, where you didn’t necessarily need to be represented by a qualified tax professional. Now, however, handling an appeal yourself is rarely advisable, particularly since the authorities will frequently engage highly qualified solicitors and barristers to argue against you. We have the knowledge and experience to give you the best chance of success and will be pleased to represent you at Tribunal.

Alternatively, where your dispute warrants it, we have the contacts to recommend suitable Counsel to represent you and draft Instructions on your behalf.
