Whilst this vacancy is for an Accounts Senior, we are looking for someone with the technical ability, interpersonal skills and ambition to move towards a supervisory position within the next year to 18 months. An Accounts Supervisor at UHY has a hybrid role – they manage a small portfolio of their own clients (building a relationship with the client and reporting directly to the partner) and they produce year-end accounts and management accounts for other managers. We also expect a Supervisor to take a leading role in training within the team.

Role overview

UHY Hacker Young in Nottingham are currently recruiting for an AAT qualified, or senior qualified by experience, to work in our accounts department. You would be acting for clients, including limited companies and sole traders, operating in a wide range of business sectors. We have a mix of clients using Xero (or other Cloud products) and more traditional bookkeeping software.

The Head of the UHY National Cloud Group is a senior manager in our office and we are looking for someone to join a growing and ambitious accounts team to support our local Cloud strategy.

Job description

  • The primary focus of the role will be supporting our manager team in a variety of areas, for example by helping with training needs within the team, tackling more complex accounts work and assisting the managers with various client-related tasks.
  • Preparation of financial statements, year-end accounts, other accounting and financial returns (VAT, Management accounts, cash flow forecasts etc)
  • The primary focus of the role will be to assist managers and supervisors in preparing accounts for a variety of business. These accounts will be for direct review by managers and partners.
  • To have a very strong focus on the benefits to our clients of cloud accounting, specifically Xero, and to help champion Xero for the Nottingham office particularly in light of the implications of Making Tax Digital
  • Someone who is passionate about helping UHY clients prosper through building profitable and successful businesses;
  • The successful applicant will have the skills to help clients interpret their accounting data and provide innovative and long-lasting solutions to their accounting problems;
  • We are looking for someone who understands the benefits that cloud products, particularly Xero, can bring to our clients and who has the enthusiasm and drive to help develop the range of Xero-based services we offer;
  • Proven ability to train and mentor junior members of staff in bookkeeping and accounts (whether from Xero, Sage or manual records);
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to proactively engage with clients;
  • A strong team player who has the ability to work under minimal supervision and work closely with the manager team in driving projects forward;
  • All applicants must have substantial accounting experience in practice, to include preparation of statutory and management accounts, VAT and bookkeeping (using Xero and Sage);
  • In order to meet the above criteria we would expect candidates to be Qualified AAT or qualified by experience.

Working arrangements

The working week: 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday) to be worked from 9.00AM to 5.30PM with occasionally some flexibility of hours to meet specific work demands. Our teams is office-based but there is the flexibility to work from home where appropriate (following successful completion of the probation period).

Location: Your principal work base is our Nottingham Office. However, you may be required to spend time working at client premises

Person specifications - Experience/skills that are desirable

Professional Qualifications    

  • A recognised accountancy qualification (AAT) and/or qualified by experience

Professional Experience    

  • To be considered for this role you must have experience in an accountancy practice and an enthusiasm for working with a variety of client businesses. 

System Experience

  • Experience in Sage and/or QuickBooks
  • Experience using Xero (Essential)
  • Experience using cloud software (Essential)
  • Experience using CCH
