International Women’s Day: Leah Gooden-Walton

Introducing Leah Gooden-Walton, taxation assistant at UHY Sheffield, and one of UHY’s promising young stars.

Joining the firm in August of 2017 as an apprentice finishing off her Level 3 and Level 4 diplomas in accounting, Leah is currently working towards her ACA/CTA joint qualification and is now preparing to sit her second professional level exam.

Leah originally came to UHY in the accounts and audit department, but has recently moved to the tax department, to stretch herself and gain more knowledge in a different area of UHY, allowing for greater understanding of the personal side of clients and building relationships.

When asked why Leah became interested in accountancy, she replied:

“I find the accountancy sector extremely interesting, you get to learn a lot about how businesses work and run, as well as what support you can offer to others to help them grow. In terms of tax, what interests me most is that it is constantly developing and changing and there are always new things to learn and expand your knowledge on.”

We asked what Leah’s aspirations were going forward. She said:

“My aspirations are to complete my ACA/CTA joint programme, becoming a qualified chartered account and chartered tax advisor. I would like to progress within the company as I continue to sit my exams.”

Fiyza Awan, one of Leah’s previous managers, said:

“Leah is real asset to our team here at UHY in Sheffield, regularly representing UHY on the Sheffield & District Chartered Accountants Students Society committee.”

Leah undoubtedly represents some of the best young accounting talent in the UK, leading to her spotlight by ICAEW in October of last year.

When asked for one piece of advice she would give to an aspiring accountant, Leah responded:

“Always work hard and push yourself. Make an effort to build new friendships within the profession, as they will be there to support you along your journey to becoming an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.”

Leading by example, we would say!
