Despite strong headwinds, dealer profitability remains encouraging

17 May 2019

Despite a great deal of uncertainty within the UK economy at present and plenty of negativity around the general retail sector, we have seen some extremely promising results in the first part of 2019. The automotive sector has been extremely resilient for many years now and we have seen some very good financial performances over the past ten years since the recession. Whilst many were cautious coming into 2019, it is pleasing to report that results remain strong, underpinned by high aftersales absorption levels and used cars. There has also been the slow return of supply to those brands which were hit hard by WLTP, again assisting the positive start to the year.

The retail automotive sector is undoubtedly going to go through some change in the coming years, however, we remain confident that the long-term future for dealers is positive and that there will be an ongoing requirement for premises, regardless of commentary suggesting it will all move to electric vehicles and click-to-buy purchasing. Having specialised in the sector for over 17 years, there has been little change and motor retail remains a key part of the economy.
