Reminder regarding fundraising

14 May 2019

The Charity Commission and Fundraising Regulator have launched a ‘safer giving campaign’ with a particular focus on charitable giving during Ramadan.

Last year it is estimated by the Muslim Charities Forum that around £130m was raised during Ramadan. This is a huge amount of donations, and the Charity Commission and Fundraising Regulator are keen to ensure that any Zakat donations made during Ramadan get to the intended causes.

To this end, the Charity Commission and Fundraising Regulator are encouraging all potential donors to check for a charity registration number, and to ask about the charitable objectives.

What you need to do

To maximise your Charity’s chances of being successful ensure that your charity registration number is prominent on your literature and that you have clearly defined your charitable objectives and those collecting funds on your behalf really understand your charity and can explain the benefits to potential donors.

You should also ensure that the ID badges provided to collectors have all the relevant information and that tins are sealed and undamaged - increasing the confidence of any potential donor that the funds are going to be going to the right place.

The above is good practice for any fundraising you may do as a charity - but it vital during key times of the year such as Ramadan and Christmas, as charitable giving increases significantly during these times and potential donors want to ensure that their gift is going to the right place and the Charity Commission and Fundraising regulator will continue to encourage ‘safer giving’.
