How public sector bodies interact with the charity sector

16 July 2018

The Government has announced plans for a new civil society strategy that will coordinate and improve how public sector bodies interact with the charity sector.

Implementation of the new strategy will be led by Tracey Crouch, Minister for Civil Society, who has said that the project is not about finding new funding for charities, but making better use of the resources that government already had available.

Key focus

One key focus is on coordination between different branches of government to ensure a joined-up approach to charities. The strategy would focus not just on registered charities but on communities and individuals who wanted to contribute.

Another key area of focus will be on increasing participation; creating partnerships with the government and strengthening relationships between sectors – public, private and voluntary – and local communities. The strategy should empower individuals to play a full role, and get communities to take action on issues that matter to them.

Next step

The next step will be a 'listening exercise' to discover what the key issues facing the sector are and to determine how the strategy should address them.

Recommendations should be published later this year. The Office for Civil Society will coordinate the work, in close partnership with other departments, particularly The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).
