Charity Digital Code of Practice launched

16 November 2018

The UK’s first digital code of practice was launched yesterday following consultations with charity representatives.

The Code highlights the following seven principles to be considered by charities wishing to develop their digital activity:

  1. Leadership – charity leaders should help their charities to be relevant and sustainable, with digital giving opportunities for leaders to build networks and collaborate further.
  2. User led – charities should make the needs and behaviours of stakeholders the starting point for everything they do digitally.
  3. Culture – the values, behaviours and ways of working should create the right environment for digital success.
  4. Strategy – charities should be ambitious about how they can use digital to achieve their objectives
  5. Skills – digital skills should be represented at all levels of the charity
  6. Managing risk and ethics – charities should determine and manage any risks involved in digital.
  7. Adaptability – charities will need to adapt to survive and prosper as digital changes how everyone lives and works.

The Charity Digital Code includes details of resources available to assist charities on each of the above seven principles and can be accessed at https://doit.life/charity-digital-code.  The need for a Code was established following a report by Lloyds Bank last year, which showed that less than half of charities had the full range of ‘basic digital skills’, with many charity leaders lacking the confidence to introduce digital changes.
