2018 academies benchmarking report

We are now in our sixth year of preparing this detailed analysis of the performance of academies across England and Wales. It is developed to summarise the current trends amongst primary and secondary schools, as well as providing comparisons for MATs, and allows you to benchmark the performance of your school against the averages.

Uncertainties over funding in the sector have prevailed this year, along with pressures from rising staff costs. Benchmarking your academy and understanding where others are managing to be more efficient may help you to identify key areas which could help you achieve savings at your trust.

We have expanded our benchmarking report this year to cover over 500 academies; a mix of primary schools, secondary schools, free schools, special schools and MATs. To provide a wider spectrum, our sample includes a mix of UHY Hacker Young clients and other academies.

Once again, we have provided a data sheet to allow you to compare your results with our report’s averages. Throughout the report we provide commentary on a range of issues that are likely to be topical for you, or that you should at least be considering.

Interestingly, there are fewer academy trusts than there were when we published the benchmarking report this time last year, the number having fallen to 2,694 trusts, and this is purely down to the rise of the multi-academy trust (MAT). Due to the rise of MATs we have introduced a separate MAT category into the report this year.
