  • Successes include silver in the London Paralympics and first in the London Marathon

We are proud to be sponsoring Shelly Woods, the leading British Paralympic athlete in wheelchair racing, through her 2020 event schedule.

Shelly has been extremely successful throughout her wheelchair racing career. Her victories include the following:

  • Silver in marathon at the 2012 London Paralympic Games
  • Silver and bronze in the 1500m and 500m racing events at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics
  • 1st place at the London Marathon in 2012 and 2007

UHY Hacker Young are providing financial support for her upcoming events, including the London and Chicago Marathon. She is also a strong contender for the marathon event at the Japan Paralympics this summer.

Shelly has always been a naturally sporty, competitive individual, despite experiencing a devastating incident at the age of 11. Shelly fell from a tree during a game of hide and seek with friends, breaking her back at the T12 vertebrae which left her paralysed from the waist down.

Shelly began competing at the age of 16 and her natural abilities meant she was put through to the nationals shortly after. She has been heavily involved in sporting events ever since. After a short break following the birth of her son in 2017, Shelly is getting back to competing with several events lined up this year.

Previously, Shelly’s sponsors have included BP, British Airways, BMW and Adidas.

Shelly commented, “I’m really excited and grateful for the support from UHY. I have a busy 2020 ahead on the road with races both in the UK and around the world and the support from UHY will help massively towards me achieving my goals and being the best that I can be.”

Colin Wright, Group Chairman, says: “We are delighted to be Shelly’s headline sponsor this year and look forward to supporting her next major competitions.

“We believe Shelly’s story to be truly inspiring and are, therefore, very keen to be a part of her journey as she gets back into competing after becoming a mother.

“As part of the sponsorship, Shelly is also set to give talks at our National Conference and regional offices, which we have no doubt will be insightful.”
