Property expert Phil Oliver has criticised the government for shelving rent reforms, saying the decision will have a major impact on the region’s housing associations.
Oliver, partner at our Nottingham office and member of our Property Sector Group, is critical of the government’s last minute decision to postpone the new measures, which would have enabled housing associations to raise rent on large properties.
The reforms should have been introduced in April as part of a review of the Government’s Council and Housing Association Rent Reform Programme but they have been shelved until after the next General Election.
Oliver said, “The Government has obviously decided to abandon these plans in the run-up to the next election because of their controversial nature.
“This brings into question the financial viability of future developments of large properties, which is a great shame for local housing authorities looking to satisfy high demand.”
