Businesses targeted by bogus advisers

Businesses are being warned to beware of cowboy ‘advisors’ offering to appeal their new business rates valuation.

All non-domestic property is valued every five years and new rateable values come into force in April 2005.

However, Phil Oliver partner at our Nottingham office says that too many businesses are being misled by unscrupulous advisors who charge a fee for the service:

“I’ve heard reports that bogus rates advisors have already taken advantage of businesses in the area.”

“Many businesses don’t realise that they have a legal right to appeal against the new rates themselves, free of charge. Any ‘advisor’ who asks for a fee upfront should be avoided at all costs. ”
