Justin: Rediscovering accountancy
Justin Clarke's career journey took a unique turn after deciding to make a change after five years working in the Healthcare sector to become an ACA apprentice at UHY Ross Brooke. His story demonstrates how a supportive workplace, determination, and a passion for learning can lead to success in a completely new field.
After studying Exercise and Sports Science at university, I progressed to a management role at my previous company, but I felt like something was missing. In that role, I gained exposure to the business’ finances, which reignited an old interest in accounting—a passion that began during my A-Level studies. Motivated by a desire for a fresh career challenge, I sought out opportunities to retrain and discovered the position at UHY Ross Brooke.
I was initially drawn to UHY’s Newbury office because of its local focus and its role within the broader UHY network. The firm’s commitment to supporting local businesses and its community-driven ethos really resonated with my values. The resources and connections provided by the national UHY group also offered exciting prospects for my professional development.
The apprenticeship programme at UHY gave me the perfect foundation to thrive. I earned my ACA qualification while developing a range of skills and gaining experience across different aspects of accounting and audit. Coming from a non-accounting background and being slightly older than many of my fellow apprentices could have been challenging, but UHY’s structured support enabled me to excel.
The firm’s flexibility was especially valuable when I faced the challenge of studying for two demanding final exams simultaneously. Having the ability to adjust how I worked made balancing my time with these extra pressures much more manageable.
I appreciate the collaborative and supportive culture at UHY. It is an enjoyable place to work where people are happy to help each other out. The culture, policies and processes in place enable the maintenance of a good work-life balance which is valued greatly, such as the ability to work from home. This all helps to make the work environment one that is enjoyable and productive.
A standout moment and future aspirations
One of the best moments of my career so far was becoming fully qualified— Receiving the text to say that I had passed my final ACA exam after all of the effort I put in was amazing. Now, as an Audit and Accounts Senior, I am focused on continuing my growth in the role, further developing my technical expertise and strengthening my relationships with clients and colleagues.
Justin’s path showcases how UHY supports individuals in reaching their potential, no matter their starting point.
