Exporting and the Overseas Business Network Initiative (OBNI)

The initiative, run with the British Chambers of Commerce alongside UKTI and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, seeks to establish accredited offices in high growth, hard to access markets across the world. After being launched in late 2012, the OBNI covers the following 41 countries:

ASIA: China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Japan, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Philippines, Pakistan, Kazakhstan

MIDEAST: UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia

EUROPE: Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Russia, Turkey AFRICA: Nigeria, South Africa, Angola, Morocco, Algeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania

LATIN AMERICA: Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Chile

British businesses will receive practical advice and support on the ground in a way that many of their foreign competitors already do. At the same time, it is hoped that some of the confusion on export advice will be removed, by highlighting a single point of support for UK businesses in each overseas market. Finally, the Chambers of Commerce in this country will have a role in flagging opportunities in overseas markets to UK companies.

The British Poland Business Centre was the first office opened as part of the OBNI. Held out as a great example of what others can achieve, the business centre in Warsaw offers hot-desking, meeting space, seminar and events space in city centre accommodation. The services provided include up to 3 hours free research each month (which may for example investigate a market and competitors or events to attend) and free trade data (highlighting the demand any particular goods code).

Elsewhere the British Chambers of Commerce has established ‘Export Britain’, a new online resource highlighting opportunities in key international markets, and links UK exporters to support available from British Chambers and business groups in the UK and around the world. Additionally, Export Britain provides information on export training and documentation, events and trade missions, and inspiring case studies featuring successful UK exporters.

UHY Hacker Young is a member of UHY International, an accountancy network covering 87 countries. We know the importance of exporting – those companies that export grow faster than their peers and are more sustainable. We also understand the issues affecting SME’s who export. For these reasons we support The South Yorkshire International Trade Centre (SYITC).
