Our firm has a long history of supporting the people and businesses of Sheffield, and the surrounding areas, to achieve their individual versions of prosperity. Originally formed in 1907 as Fredrick Slater & Co, the firm was joined by Walter Wingfield as a partner in 1936 to become Wingfield Slater. In 2007 the firm joined the UHY Hacker Young network.
After over 100 years we have gone from strength to strength, building a team of dedicated professionals meaning we are large enough to deal with the requirements of our most demanding clients but are also small enough to treat every client as an individual.
Find out more about our journey, and what has contributed to the firm we are today.
Our firm’s roots can be traced back to 1907, when Frederick J. Slater & Co, Accountants and Estate Agents first appeared in Sheffield’s White’s Directory. From a small office on Norfolk Row, the practice steadily grew and evolved, later becoming Carnall Slater & Co.
In 1936, Walter Wingfield joined the practice on what was meant to be a one-year secondment, he stayed for 53 years. Over time, new faces and new partnerships shaped the firm, with generations of families becoming part of our story.
By the 1970s and 80s, significant developments included:
- John Wingfield joining his father Walter in 1976.
- A name change to Wingfield Slater & Co in 1981.
- The absorption of P.T. Prince & Co, expanding our client base by 50%.
- A move to modern offices on Wellington Street in 1982.
Throughout the decades, the firm thrived on collaboration and long-term client relationships.
Notable milestones included:
- 1990s – Strategic merger with Norman Hemmingfield & Co., creating Wingfield Slater Hemmingfield.
- 2007 – Invitation to join UHY, marking the most significant development in our history and positioning us within a leading UK firm.
- 2010 – Relocation to Broadfield Court, reflecting our commitment to modern, efficient working practices.
On 1 March 2014, the firm officially adopted the UHY Hacker Young brand. This marked the beginning of an exciting new era, uniting our proud local heritage with the global strength of one of the world’s largest accounting organisations.
Today, we continue to build on more than 100 years of history in Sheffield, supporting our clients with the same principles that guided Frederick Slater back in 1907: expertise, trust and a commitment to lasting success.
